Civic Interior Design Project
Joint Business Startup Space

Jules-Plag was tasked with designing a 2,500 sq. ft. shared office space in D.C., an urban hub known for its entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. This civic interior design project embraces the growing trend of shared workspaces, promoting sustainable resource use while fostering collaboration among start-up companies.
The office spans one and a half floors of a modern commercial building, strategically located to provide accessibility and connectivity for emerging businesses. Our design approach focused on functionality, flexibility, and an open, industrial aesthetic that reflects the dynamic energy of its occupants.
To create a seamless and efficient environment, we implemented an open-plan layout with minimal walls, allowing for fluid movement and interaction between different work areas. Instead of traditional enclosed offices, we used furniture, strategic lighting, and subtle material transitions to define distinct zones, including:
Workstations designed for both individual focus and collaborative teamwork
A welcoming reception area that serves as the central point of interaction
A fully equipped kitchen to encourage informal networking and social engagement
Meeting spaces with adaptable configurations to accommodate both small discussions and larger presentations
The industrial-inspired aesthetic features exposed ceilings, polished concrete floors, and raw steel elements, balanced with warm wood finishes and contemporary furnishings to create a space that is both professional and inviting. Large windows allow for abundant natural light, enhancing productivity and reducing energy consumption.
Sustainability was a key consideration in this project, with the use of energy-efficient lighting, eco-friendly materials, and smart space planning to minimize waste and maximize usability. The result is a modern, high-performance workspace that embodies the future of urban co-working—where creativity, efficiency, and community thrive.
